Statement by McCollum on Earth Day 2022

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) released this statement today to celebrate Earth Day:

“On this 52nd Earth Day, we take time to reflect on stewardship of this precious planet we call home,” said Rep. McCollum. “This is an opportunity to celebrate our natural treasures and renew our commitment to protecting the Earth for future generations. In Congress, I use my role as an Appropriations Committee member to make federal investments in our environment — keeping our air clean and our water clean; ensure that our public lands and resources are well managed and accessible; fund search and cleanup efforts so that our service members have safe housing, and more.

“As climate change continues to impact our communities, we need to take care of our natural resources, especially our clean water. The Mississippi River is a source of drinking water for millions of people; it’s an important flyway for migrating birds, and it’s a source of jobs and economic development from the headwaters of northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. It’s also #6 on the 2022 list of America’s most endangered rivers. This is why I introduced the Mississippi River Restoration and Resilience Initiative Act (MRRRI), legislation to provide federal funding opportunities to restore and revitalize the river. I’m glad to have worked with the folks at the Center for Global Environmental Education at Hamline University on this video explaining the need for a coordinated approach in the Mississippi corridor. By working together, we can restore and protect the vitality of the river and keep it strong for generations to come.
