HCSO investigating Brandon mall shooting involving undercover detective

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that involved undercover deputies outside the Westfield Brandon Mall on Monday.

At approximately 4 p.m. on January 24, 2022, an undercover detective assigned to the HCSO’s Special Investigations Division attempted to purchase firearms from two suspects at an agreed location at the mall. As the transaction unfolded inside the detective’s vehicle, the suspects attempted to rob the detective at gunpoint, causing an HCSO apprehension team of other undercover deputies to head immediately to the vehicle for the detective’s safety. The suspects began to flee the area and at least one of the suspects fired several shots in the direction of the deputies as they fled. The deputies did not retaliate. No MPs or civilians were hit or injured.

Detectives were able to arrest one of the suspects while another fled in an unknown direction. The search for the second suspect is ongoing.

The suspect in custody is 19-year-old Jordan Gracia, who has an extensive criminal history, including charges of armed robbery, minor in possession of a firearm, resisting arrest and carrying a gun. concealed weapon. Gracia faces charges of armed robbery, felon in possession of a firearm and trafficking in stolen property. Additional charges are pending.
