Elmwood Park man stabs mother in the back on New Years Eve

A man from Elmwood Park stabbed his mother in the back with a kitchen knife on New Years Eve, breaking the blade between her shoulder blades, responders said.

Garfield Police have captured Emiliano Domi, 25, after investigators said he fled after Friday’s attack on Martha Avenue, near the border of the two towns.

Initially, it was not clear exactly what motivated the alleged assault, which sent the 54-year-old victim to hospital. The Albanian immigrant told speakers that she was suddenly attacked from behind.

She was expected to survive, responders said.

Domi, a former ShopRite cashier in Lodi, has a history of domestic violence, sources with direct knowledge of the incident said. He was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons-related offenses and remained in custody in Bergen County Jail pending an initial appearance in Hackensack’s Central Judicial Processing Court.

Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Major Crimes Unit are handling the case. They are aided, among other things, by the Bergen County Sheriff‘s Criminal Identification Office, which gathered evidence, including what was left of the 6-inch knife.
