EARLY ORGANIZATIONS

1921 - Hamline Commercial Club

This congratulatory letter from, dated October 12, 1921, is from the Commercial Club's president to the vice president. It reveals several interesting facts of the day:

  • The Club was headquartered at the Masonic Temple on the corner of Snelling and Capitol (today's Englewood)
  • Names of the Club's officers, presumably neighborhood residents, appear at the top of the letterhead
  • There are two addresses at the bottom of the page for the Club president and secretary: in the "Metropolitan Bank Building" and the "Pioneer Building" -- Are these in downtown Saint Paul?

1938 - North Snelling Club

This Pioneer Press clipping from January 6, 1938, shows a group with ambition:

"Projects in which the club is interested are a clubhouse for the Hamline playgrounds, Snelling Avenue and Lafond street, and better street lighting on Snelling avenue."

1948 - Long Time Resident Retires

This article from the 1948 Midway Monitor about longtime resident A. J. Wallace gives some excellent history of both businesses and the neighborhood.
